Rag Doll | Basic Sewing

My daughter turned 2 recently, and I wracked my brain over her gift. She has tons of clothes and the relatives get her even more clothes and all the latest name-brand toys. Plastic toys, with whirring sounds and automated coos, flashing lights and sound effects are all very exciting for her. But, a couple of months (days?) later she has set them off to the side and is playing with a cardboard box or something. We got her a few gifts, but I wanted to make something for her. Something that she would keep for years. I made her a little girl doll and she loves it! Hugging it and giving it kisses are a big part of her day. It’s a pretty wacky looking doll, but at least she can say that no-one else has one like it. I’m envisioning it sitting on her bed at 16, as she says to everyone who comes into her room, “Look at the weird doll my Mom made me when I was a kid.”

DIY Rock Climbing Birthday Invitation

This past year we tried out rock climbing at the Deerhurst Resort and my son loved it. He surprised us by making it all the way to the top several times. So this year’s birthday party theme was pretty easy to come up with! As with all projects, I searched around on the net looking for some great inspiration and found Martha Stewart’s rock climbing invite. LOVED it! So I went out to source all of the materials. I wanted the tag to relate a bit more to the six year old boys that we would be sending the invites to, so I designed a logo for the event, which I am intending to put on T-shirts to hand out at the party. Boys Rock!

Superhero Potty-Training Reward Chart

Bribery. An ancient tool which has claimed results from the beginning of times. These days we call it “an incentive scheme” or “rewards system.” A reward system works on many toddler occasions. It is particularly helpful for potty training, making this often tough transition fun and rewarding. My boy loves superheroes (surprise) so I made him his own potty training poster. And with the help of Superman, Batman, a couple of pieces of chocolate and “the big prize,” my little Super Liam ditched his diapers and changed into underwear (Spiderman underwear, of course).

note; this poster is very “boy” so with enough requests from moms / dads of toddler girls, I will be happy to create a princess or Dora version. Just say the word (through comments on this blog post or our Facebook site)

Picnic Basket

With all these wonderful sunny days, it’s a great time for a picnic. We had all the treats and drinks, but nothing to put them in. So, I thought I’d get crafty and transform and old, empty diaper box into a picnic basket. With the material and trimmings I chose, it’s a bit glitzy – sort of “Liberace goes picnicking,” but you can choose material to make it your own, and tamp down the fabulousness a bit.
