Custom Picture Ledge made from Crown Moulding

A design feature I think looks really neat is a picture ledge that crosses an entire wall or a large part of it above a couch, sideboard or other wide piece of furniture.  It is a modern and clean, sleek look but allows for plenty of flexibility in terms of organizing, reorganizing and remixing your artwork and photos. For my new cottage, I wanted to do the same and had considered buying  a couple of ledges from Ikea and using them in a row, something I have done in the past for the baby room.  However, a few things I don’t like about doing it that way are: 1) it is not a seamless connection and you can clearly see the ledge is made of various ledges in a row, and (2) it is never the exact size that would be ideal above a specific couch. I decided to make my own. When I was browsing the wood section of Home Depot, my  eye was caught by the vast collection of crown moulding and I had a DIY AHA moment: some variations of crown moulding would make for the ideal ledge as they would have the built-in “outer ridge” which would prevent the frames from sliding off the narrow “shelf.”

DIY Flower Wall Art | Nursery Decor

In an effort to save money, I had been on the hunt for a DIY art project for the new baby’s (now Brooke’s) room. I did a Google image search and stumbled across this fun blog – It’s Doable: Crafts, Food and Life. Now, like most DIY art projects these days, there are lots of people out there who have created their own flower art using the same technique. I’m sure you could find many variations of this on Pinterest, etc. for inspiration, but  I had my own vision so I didn’t want to be swayed by any other ideas…

What I LOVE about this craft is that it can incorporate as little or as much colour, texture and pattern as you like. While I would love to be able to purchase expensive fabrics for curtains, pillows, etc., it’s just not in the budget. This allows me to introduce colours and patterns into the room without blowing the bank.

Wall Gallery | DIY Decorating & Photo Display

Our master bedroom was in dire need of decor updating. When we moved into our house 2.5 years ago, I was 39 weeks pregnant with Robin. Needless to say, it was chaos for the first few months and now, over two years later, we are still slowly getting each room organized and decorated. With a new baby on the way, I was quite motivated to start crossing some projects off the list, including hanging more art and, in particular, more family photos. This gallery was a great way to fill up an empty wall, giving our room a more modern feel and satisfying my need to have more photography on display (even if my husband Kyle and I are the only ones to see it!).

The Kitchen Hub | DIY Chalkboard Wall

“Organized” is not a word that springs to anyone’s mind when describing me in high school, and that was when I was only running my own life. Now, with two small children who have different classes and after-school activities, my husband’s job, sports and social activities, along with trying to start my own business, organization is my saviour!
