Roundup: An Up-Cycled Wardrobe

At the beginning of the summer, I started to do a purge of my family’s winter wardrobes. Aside from the things my boys have outgrown, it’s a bit sad to see a pile of new-ish things that they wore through and things I no longer use due to moth holes (ugh!) or wear and tear. I’m good about donating gently-used wears, but it’s the pile of potential textile waste that doesn’t sit well with me. Luckily, there are so many great ideas out there on how to up-cycle and refresh pieces so that they can have a second life in your wardrobe and not an untimely end in a dump somewhere. Here’s a few of my favourites.

Soft Bike Basket

Spring is here and it’s time to get outside and get active. My little one is learning how to ride a balance bike, and part of the fun of getting your first bike is kitting it out with all the bells and whistles (literally). Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of little boy accessories, so I promised him I would make him his own little basket so all his stuffies and toy cars can go for a ride, too.

Two Quick St. Patrick’s Ideas

For me, St. Patrick’s Day means two things: Shamrock Shakes and spring is just around the corner. I’m not one to normally do a St. Patty’s craft, but it’s been a long winter and I’m eager to welcome some fresh greens into my life! Here are two quick little shamrock projects using my current favourite media: washi tape. With a little luck we’ll be in sandals soon enough.

Paper Holiday Wreath

I love decorating for  holidays, but one thing we haven’t had in a while was a Christmas wreath. We used to buy fresh greenery to hang on our door, but I decided this year I’d try something more lasting by crafting my own. I love working with paper, and since our style of door is tricky to hang anything on, something delicate would work just inside our entryway.  Feel free to play with colour and texture: a mix of red and cream poinsettias with green leaves would be lovely, and I used a paper with a slight texture on one side. An all white version like this could even stay up all year.  Despite its availability and relatively low cost, paper can seem like an intimidating medium, but if you choose a sturdy heavier stock like I did, it’s pretty durable and easier to keep for future use.
