Custom Picture Ledge made from Crown Moulding

A design feature I think looks really neat is a picture ledge that crosses an entire wall or a large part of it above a couch, sideboard or other wide piece of furniture.  It is a modern and clean, sleek look but allows for plenty of flexibility in terms of organizing, reorganizing and remixing your artwork and photos. For my new cottage, I wanted to do the same and had considered buying  a couple of ledges from Ikea and using them in a row, something I have done in the past for the baby room.  However, a few things I don’t like about doing it that way are: 1) it is not a seamless connection and you can clearly see the ledge is made of various ledges in a row, and (2) it is never the exact size that would be ideal above a specific couch. I decided to make my own. When I was browsing the wood section of Home Depot, my  eye was caught by the vast collection of crown moulding and I had a DIY AHA moment: some variations of crown moulding would make for the ideal ledge as they would have the built-in “outer ridge” which would prevent the frames from sliding off the narrow “shelf.”

We love DIY Painted furniture!

Painted furniture – one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to make an old/tired/ugly piece of furniture new and beautiful again!

This replaced our old Ikea hutch, which had moved with us from our apartment and was supposed to be only temporary in our new dining room. But alas, it ended up being there for close to three years until we (mostly me) made a decision and had our new, custom sideboard designed and built.

From Junk to Funk | Part 1 DIY Side Table

In a serious effort to de-clutter our house I have been running into, what seem to be at first sight, pieces of junk. It has become a bit of a hobby to upcycle these pieces into meaningful, unique items that get a second chance at life in my house. Today I am sharing the first of these “junk-to-funk” creations.

A few weeks ago, I ventured into the spider-infested crawl space under my front porch (a place I have not dare to go yet since we bought the house 3 years ago). The very dusty treasure I found was a box filled with wooden shims. Imagination sparked, determination fierce, I set to work and created a small, custom side table I had been looking for but not found for our new beach cottage.
