Happy back to school! Fall and learning new things go hand in hand, and I’ve been thinking a lot about what I’d like my kids to learn this year outside of the classroom. One thing I do want them to learn one day is something I’m passionate about – how to sew. I certainly don’t expect them to take it up like I did as a child, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, knowing your way around a needle and thread – and a machine if you’ve got access – can be just as handy as knowing how to hammer a nail.

I don’t know about you, but I often find myself visiting friends or neighbours’ homes and wishing that I had something a little more interesting than wine to offer as a hostess gift. Don’t get me wrong – wine is a wonderful gift. But it’s sometimes nice to show up with something a little different. And who doesn’t love receiving something sweet (and oh so pretty)?
Although it’s great in cocktails, over ice cream, and with summer berries, vanilla-infused simple syrup also pairs nicely with hot cocoa, coffee and pancakes so this is also a lovely gift leading into Fall and the holidays beyond. Just change up your labels to something festive and you’re set!

My 8 year old daughter was “dying” for a Barbie house. She has had two different ones over the years, but they were not great quality and didn’t last long. I decided to make a sturdy wooden Barbie house that we can keep and hopefully pass on to other kids in our family.
