Learn to break 3 rules and let go while making a fondant cake | Baking

I was so excited to get started on my second fondant cake, but I knew flowers and polka dots would not cut it for my six-year-old son. His birthday party theme was rock climbing (see earlier invitation and loot bag posts) so I knew this cake had to be more creative. I love breaking rules and once I came up with a general idea of what I was going to do I was excited to get started.

Custom T-shirts and Loot bags | Rock Climbing Party

Those of you who read my last post know that our theme for my son’s party this year was rock climbing. I wanted to make the boys a keepsake to remember the day by, so I used the logo I had previously designed for the invitations and made t-shirts out of them. For the loot bags I used scrap pieces of fabric and added rock climbing touches. The kids loved the t-shirts and my homemade gorp!

Cupcake Toppers & Gift Tags | Pumpkin Birthday Party

Robin’s birthday is in October, so when we celebrated her first birthday (2 years ago!) I loved the idea of a pumpkin-themed party. Once I got going, it ended up being SO easy to make decorations inspired by autumn and pumpkins and to tie everything together using various shades of orange, brown, yellow and green. Although I had to spend a little money for some essential items (colourful paper, pumpkin press, etc.), I’ve been able to re-use these supplies each year.

Rag Doll | Basic Sewing

My daughter turned 2 recently, and I wracked my brain over her gift. She has tons of clothes and the relatives get her even more clothes and all the latest name-brand toys. Plastic toys, with whirring sounds and automated coos, flashing lights and sound effects are all very exciting for her. But, a couple of months (days?) later she has set them off to the side and is playing with a cardboard box or something. We got her a few gifts, but I wanted to make something for her. Something that she would keep for years. I made her a little girl doll and she loves it! Hugging it and giving it kisses are a big part of her day. It’s a pretty wacky looking doll, but at least she can say that no-one else has one like it. I’m envisioning it sitting on her bed at 16, as she says to everyone who comes into her room, “Look at the weird doll my Mom made me when I was a kid.”
